Make an Investment in Yourself-- Get Skilled Up

Now is the perfect time to work on developing self reliance skills. The economy is in transition, and people are rethinking things. This is the ideal moment for all of us to add to our repertoire of skills and abilities by investing in ourselves.

The skills I speak of are of value in both your personal and professional lives. If I were asked to make a list of skills to target I would probably recommend the following personal skills:

  • Home improvement, maintenance, and repair DIY
  • Auto maintenance and repair DIY
  • Home cooking skills
  • Vegetable gardening skills
  • Wilderness skills (Fire making, fishing, hunting, survival)
  • Frugality
  • Reading

If you stop and think about it-- many of these personal skills will benefit you professionally as well. How? They will build your confidence, strengthen your problem solving abilities, and may spark more creative thinking.

What about professional skills? Try some of these:

  • Entrepreneurship of any kind-- even it fails
  • Learning a second or third language
  • Volunteering to develop new skills like fundraising
  • Mastering new computer software like database or spreadsheets
  • Teaching a continuing education or college course
  • Join a Toastmasters or similar public speaking group
  • Get certified in something
  • Learn everything there is to know about something and write a report/book about it
Now is the time to tinker and brush up . . . take the time to invest in yourself! It will pay dividends now and in the future.
