Frugal Christmas Usually Means a Practical Christmas

Christmas is a week away . . . if you want to keep it frugal, try to keep it practical.

By practical I mean things that are needed and used regularly.  Practical gifts might include replacement of the old and worn out such as:

  • A new iron and ironing board cover
  • New Teflon fry pans
  • Fresh dish or bath towels

Practical gifts might also include "supplies":
  • Coffee beans and filters
  • Popcorn for the popper
  • Birdseed for the feeders
  • Alcohol

My grandmother used to give us two gifts every Christmas:
  • Some toy we wanted like a GI Joe
  • A care package with some candy, new playing cards, fresh tube socks, toothpaste and a new toothbrush, and a book, among other more practical things

She had the right idea by mixing a more frivolous gift and a more practical gift . . . she gave us joy on her limited budget.

To this day, I still prefer the more practical gifts . . . frugal Christmas gifts make more sense.
