Words of Wisdom: Yogi Berra

Yogi Berra is American baseball legend.  He was a New York Yankee catcher and later became a manager.  He is well known for his unusual sayings.

  • It's like deja-vu, all over again
  • I wish I had an answer to that because I'm tired of answering that question
  • There are some people who, if they don't already know, you can't tell 'em
  • You can observe a lot by just watching
  • I never blame myself when I'm not hitting. I just blame the bat and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it isn't my fault that I'm not hitting, how can I get mad at myself?
  • We made too many wrong mistakes
  • I never said most of the things I said
  • Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours
  • Half the lies they tell about me aren't true
  • I'm not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did
  • If you come to a fork in the road, take it
  • Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical
  • If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else
  • The future ain't what it used to be
  • It was impossible to get a conversation going, everybody was talking too much
  • Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded
  • If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be
  • The other teams could make trouble for us if they win
  • I always thought that record would stand until it was broken
  • You wouldn't have won if we'd beaten you
  • A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore
  • It ain't over till it's over

I always enjoy the story about Yogi and one of his team mates driving around the city looking for the stadium. His team mate says "Yogi, we're lost!" And, Yogi responds with, "Yeah, but we're making good time."

When I was teaching a class many years ago in Poland, I pulled a Yogi Berra. I told the class to pair up in groups of three. My associate and I started laughing about my gaffe, and my students didn't get it at all. Apparently in the translation, the idea that a pair is always two just didn't come through.
