The Piranhas and Vultures I Live With . . .

The kids are unbelievable-- they attack and destroy food within minutes of it coming in the house.  We have four kids effectively between 10-14 years old.  When I came home with groceries on Friday they attacked.

  • Bags of apples-- nearly wiped out
  • Bunch of bananas-- stripped
  • Granola bars-- disappearing fast
  • Yogurts-- gone except for blueberry
  • Iced tea or lemonade (Homemade Lemonade-- There is No Substitute)-- drained
  • Gatorade-- guzzled
  • OJ-- evaporated

I literally posted a note on a batch of homemade iced tea (Sunday Afternoon Homemade Iced Tea) I made on the weekend that read, "Have Water Instead!" (Just Drink Water!)  Had I not done this, we all would have had water at dinner.

When my step kids get in the car to come back from their father's house, the first thing we hear is, "I'm hungry!"  "Don't they feed you?" is our retort.

I feel compelled to sample things not long after they come into the house, if I don't-- I never will.  Thankfully, I can stretch a dollar at the grocery store, but it is ridiculous sometimes.  Here are a few posts on saving at the store:

I tell my wife just wait until they are all teens if this is how it is now . . .  just wait!

We are going to get an extra kid for a few weeks this summer and I'm already planning for the FOOD FRENZY - no school to keep them busy and an extra mouth to feed! My strategy: DOLLAR STORE! My junk food purchases will be made at the dollar store - a bag of chips for a $1 will get eaten just as happily as the $3 name brand chips. $1 Little Debbies will get eaten just as fast as $2 ones! I am also going to forgo soda altogether (except for a secret stash of Diet Pepsi that I NEED in order to live!!!! ha ha)

I know $50 at the dollar store will go much further than $50 at the grocery store. That doesn't cover the regular breakfast/lunch/dinner items but the snacking is handled. That's my plan, anyway....we'll see how it all pans out...

Sounds like a solid strategy.  I literally just returned from the supermarket on the way home from work and bought store brand pretzels and cheese doodles at a buck a bag for the kids lunch snacks.

I told my wife to hide them from the piranhas . . . nothing goes stale in this house.
