25 Ideas on Where to Hide Money in Your Car
A regular reader, Atkins, asked about hiding spots in the car after reading my earlier post, Where to Hide Money . . . Literally! I put my thinking cap on and here are some of the ideas I came up with.
Some of these are casual hiding places (running into a store or a restaurant) and some or more involved (long-term, emergency hiding). You also need to think about who has access to your car in some cases, such as gas station attendants, mechanics, and car wash personnel.
I am a big fan of duct tape and velcro (make sure the surface to be taped is sparkling clean-- rubbing alcohol helps). If you are handy-- fake panels can be fashioned.
- Out of sight in glove compartment or trunk
- In the sun visor
- In the ashtrays
- Underneath the ashtray
- In a book
- In the ceiling material (I would access through the ceiling light cover)
- Taped or velcroed under the headrests
- In CD cases
- In clothing in the car
- In or under the cupholders
- Behind the gas cap or cap door
- In the console
- Taped or velcroed under the floormats
- Taped to the inside of panel doors or covers
- Velcroed under seats or dashboard
- Inside a pen in the car
- Taped under hood or trunk
- Between the splits in the rear seats
- In a watertight tube suspended by a string in the washer fluid bottle (My most clever idea?)
- Taped to the battery
- Taped to an inside panel under the hood
- Taped behind the license plates (Good spot for a spare key?)
- Inside the jack kit
- Under the spare
- Create an "original looking" panel or box that installs (bolted or welded) under the hood near engine
What are your ideas?

1. In the sun visor
I think this is pretty clever! But it needs to be closed so it looks original.
2. In the ceiling material (I would access through the ceiling light cover)
Very clever!
3. Taped or velcroed under the headrests
Maybe inside, especially if the cover zips off.
4. Taped or velcroed under the floormats
I hid one of my license plates under a floormat while traveling in Mexico, where the cops sometimes remove a plate if you park illegally.
5. Taped to the inside of panel doors or covers
Door panels are good
6. Velcroed under seats or dashboard
Also good
7. In a watertight tube suspended by a string in the washer fluid bottle (My most clever idea?)
A plus!
8. Taped to the battery
No, the battery is a frequently-stolen item.
9. Create an "original looking" panel or box that installs (bolted or welded) under the hood near engine
Has to have the same dirtiness as other components.

What if you get locked out of your car?
What if you get locked out of your car? To make it worse: (1) You are away from your home locality. (2) In the middle of nowhere (3) No cell phone - - or it’s in the car (4) The temperature is 20 below.
Variation: You are not locked out, but you have lost your key.

I mentioned taping a key behind the license plate. I also think they have magnetic key holders you can mount underneath the car . . .
