Where to Hide Money . . . Literally!

Suppose you have some cash and or valuables that for some reason, you don't want to put in the bank . . . where do you hide them at home or in a hotel room while traveling?  Part of being frugal is not losing money to thieves . . .

Here are 20 ideas I had or found doing some research:

  1. Fake electrical outlets
  2. Between the picture and the backing of a picture frame
  3. In a book or CD/DVD case
  4. In heat and AC ducts
  5. Holes or hollowed out spaces in furniture
  6. Behind a mirror
  7. Behind baseboards
  8. Under floorboards
  9. Inside a hollowed out door (Under the hinges)
  10. Buried in a house plant
  11. Buried in the garden
  12. Inside a hollow tree in the yard
  13. Frozen and wrapped like meat in the freezer
  14. False pipe in the basement
  15. Inside the service panel of your washing machine or dryer
  16. Duct taped under fixtures in a hotel room or at home
  17. In waterproof containers in the toilet water tank or dehumidifier
  18. Behind the oil tank in the basement
  19. In a ziploc inside of coffee, flour, rice, etc.
  20. In a diversion safe (fake product safe)

Where do you hide cash and valuables?

My house was robbed a year ago and every inch of my house was gone through and tossed. Every drawer was open, furniture upended, and even my deep freezer was gone through. I did, however, notice two specific places that were untouched. # 1 was the laundry hamper and #2 were my bookshelves ( I guess robbers are not big on reading which might be part of their problem). Ever since then, these places seem like the safest places to keep important items. Thanks for the other ideas- a few of them hadn't even crossed my mind!

I just checked: I have about $250 in the car as emergency money. This would be used in case of a house fire, or being in some remote place where the credit card suddenly fails and I need gas.
