What If?
I believe in being prepared . . .
I am not an "End of the World" and civilization is finished survivalist, but I do believe disruptions, interruptions, and shortages are a real possibility. I also believe we can and should prepare to deal with and smooth out those problems.
We take many things for granted in this country, and look like chickens with their heads cut off at the first sign of trouble. What do we take for granted? How about:
- Gasoline/diesel
- Electricity
- Natural gas
- Heating oil
- Propane
- Food on grocery store shelves
- Cash from ATMs
- Water
- Garbage removal
- Availability of emergency services
Have you ever really asked, "What if . . . ?"
To get a taste of what life might be like in the face of a disruption, try buying a gallon of milk before a big snow storm. Ever go to the service station when they are out of regular? How did that inconvenience feel? What about the empty ATM after a long holiday weekend? How did you feel the last time you had to cope with a water restriction?
I am not suggesting stockpiling, but rather having some back-ups (Plan B: The Power of Redundancy ), like:
- Food in the pantry and freezer (Our Frozen Assets)
- A couple of five gallon containers of fuel in the garage (Oil Heat and a Low Tank-- Short Fill it! )
- Some cash on hand (Where to Hide Money . . . Literally!)
- Some water reserves
- A compost pile for garage
- Some first aid supplies
- Some flashlights
- Charcoal for the grill
- More here (Are You Prepared For a Natural Disaster?)
Why suffer anymore than you have to?
