Merchants of Misery

Do you know any merchants of misery?  You know-- people who make their living off the misery and troubles of others.

  • Divorce and personal injury attorneys
  • Repo men
  • Bail bondsmen
  • Tax agents
  • Used car dealers
  • Pawn brokers
  • Check cashing places
  • Credit and collections agents

Sure these folks need to make a living, but they choose these careers and in many cases, they seem to secretly (and sometimes not so secretly) enjoy the misery of others.  How can I say that?

I have seen and overheard this "enjoyment" firsthand amongst divorce attorneys at the courthouse-- it is amazing the things you can overhear when you have time on your hands and you listen carefully.  Remember, I have literally spent days in court (20-30 by my estimate over the years).  The laughing and joking at the expense of others who are in the midst of personal turmoil is quite disturbing to me.

I am certain this post will ruffle some feathers, and I will probably be accused of overly generalizing . . .

What's your opinion?
