How Do You Know If You Are Frugal?
Look at what you are buying. One would think it would be looking at what you are not buying? You will know if you are frugal or not (How to Become Frugal?). However, bear with me a minute . . .
I was thinking about what I have been purchasing over the last six months to a year and I noticed a pattern. I have only purchased:
- Domain names for future website projects
- Fishing supplies (Want a Frugal Hobby?)
- Tools (The Turn of the Screw and Must Have Basic Tools and My DIY Projects and Savings)
- Gardening supplies (Spring is Here: A Gardening Recap (Part II) and Spring is Coming: A Gardening Recap)
- Automotive parts (DIY Auto Savings . . . )
Do you see a pattern there? I do-- a frugal pattern (Frugality Defined and More Thoughts on Frugality . . . ). I am only buying things that provide a potential return, as well as time and money savings. A very frugal approach, if I do say so myself . . .
No big screen TV, no latest electronic gadgets (my GPS purchase was work related and tax deductible), and no fancy new clothes because the "fashions" have changed (I dress conservatively for work and practically for home).
Bottomline: Frugal people like me and many of you know to look for a return on our precious dollars spent-- quality, value, and returns every time (Quality and Value and Is This Purchase An Investment?).

Do I qualify? I bought two new pairs of denims and two pairs of shoes.

In my book, denims are extremely frugal-- mine last for years . . .

These are all examples of investments in your future. Most frugal spending "experts" will tell you that the investment angle is just a rationalization. For many it is, but for others it isn't.
If you don't invest in your future, then you won't be directing it, it will be directing you.
