DIY: How to Polish Your Shoes

So we have done the laundry (
DIY: How to Do the Laundry), ironed your shirt (DIY: How to Iron a Shirt ), now let's put the finishing touches on you for that interview or date-- polish your shoes.

Why bother?

  • Employers look at your shoes- ever notice people look down when they talk to you?
  • Women pay attention to shoes
  • Shoes are an investment-- take care of them

Assuming you are convinced, here's what to do:

  1. Get a basic kit $10-20 with polish, applicators, brush, and shamy cloth
  2. Brush the shoes off
  3. Wipe them down with a damp rag
  4. Apply the polish
  5. Let sit for a few minutes
  6. Brush off the polish
  7. Buff with brush
  8. Buff with shamy cloth
  9. Put shoe cedar shoe trees (to help keep shape and absorb moisture) in shoes

Total time about five minutes per pair (once or twice per month)-- saves about $5 per pair of shoes.  I extend the job by brushing the shoes after each wear and touching up with an express shine pad.

Men who have been in the military will know how to do this. I polished my own shoes as a kid since it was part of the culture where I grew up. But then I went into the Air Force and learned how to get a mirror shine.
