Words of Wisdom: Henry David Thoreau on Government
Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, naturalist, and philosopher. Here are some of his thoughts on government:
- The character inherent in the American people has done all that has been accomplished; and it would have done somewhat more, if the government had not sometimes got in its way
- Any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it
- Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is in prison
- But government in which the majority rule in all cases can not be based on justice, even as far as men understand it
