Plan B: The Power of Redundancy
Redundancy is a core principle of preparedness (Are You Prepared For a Natural Disaster?).
Ever heard the expression, "Two is one and one is none!"?
I have seen or heard this advice in articles, TV, and movies. It is usually used in military, hiking (A Short Hike Into the Woods), camping, or wilderness survival circles. Redundancy is the reason you carry more than one of certain items such as:
- Fire starter
- Flash light
- Knife
- Compass
- First aid gear
- Etc.
If something fails, fouls, or is lost-- you have another. You are effectively counting on good old Murphy's Law and preparing for that eventuality (A Horse, a Horse, My Kingdom For a Horse . . . ).
The thing is we should all use this principle as our guide in other aspects of our lives . . .
- Autos (The Case For a Third Car)
- Career (Now May Be the Time to Retool . . . and Think About Learning Another Skill or Trade)
- Business (What is Defensive Entrepreneurship? and What is Multipreneuring?)
- Plans (How to Create An Action Plan . . . and On Planning . . . )
- Safety (Protect Yourself While Traveling)
Even on Opening Day (Opening Day Tomorrow . . . Going Fishing), I had a backup rod and reel so I would not waste time if there was a problem or breakdown-- there was one. I always have more than one pen when meeting with clients-- in case the ink quits (Always Carry a Pen and Paper).
Why take the chance?
