Words of Wisdom: Ricardo Montalban on Parenting

I have my kids for the whole week this week as they are off from school and it has my mind on parenting.  I heard about this letter a year or so ago.

Ricardo Montalban was an actor well known for his roles on Fantasy Island and Star Trek-- apparently he had a few good ideas about parenting too.  Here is his letter:

Dear Son.

As long as you live in this house, you will follow the rules.  When you have your own, you can make your own rules.  In this house we do not have a democracy.  I did not campaign to be your father.  You did not vote for me.  We are father and son by the grace of God, and I accept that privilege and awesome responsibility.  In accepting it, I have an obligation to perform the role of a father.  I am not your pal.  Our ages are too different.  We can share many things, but we are not pals.  I also am your friend, but we are on entirely different levels.  You will do in this house as I say and you must not question me because whatever I ask you to do is motivated by love.  This will be hard for you to understand until you have a son of your own.  Until then, trust me.

Your father (Ricardo Montalban)

What gets to my wife and I is the problem people have with saying "No" to their children these days . . .

The main cause of parents not being able to say "no" is that they don't have the courage it takes. Lack of courage is common in this ever increasing "nation of cowards."

Children need limits and guidelines, and they'll test for them if they're not clearly established. They also need a role model to show what good parents are supposed to be. They'll follow this role model with younger children and when they have children of their own.

Therefore, poor parenting is a disservice to the parents, their children and other children as well. No one likes to be the "heavy" but someone has to step up to the plate.
