Protect Yourself While Traveling

I used to travel on business extensively-- 2-3 flights per week at times (Believe me the glamor fades fast).  I always had my safety and security of my belongings in the back of my mind-- whether on a plane, in a taxi, in a hotel room, or on the street of a strange city.  Having lived and worked in New York City for so many years it became second nature.  Here is what I did (and still do):

  • I always knew where the exits were and the procedures for getting out
  • I familiarized myself with my surroundings by reading maps
  • I kept a low profile and hid my valuables on me or in my room
  • I wasn't conspicuous in dress and with money
  • I had basic ideas on defending myself

That last one has come up in conversations with colleagues . . .

I flew from New York to southern California exactly one month to the day after 9/11.  People asked me why I was comfortable with that and I responded it is safer to fly now than it was a month ago (heightened security).  They asked me what I would do if terrorists tried to take over the plane-- I said I would defend myself with available weapons that would get past security:

  • My belt
  • Pens and pencils
  • A rolled up magazine
  • My keys between my fingers
  • My body and mind

I think you get the picture . . .

When traveling in your vehicle (like I do now):

  • Keep things (valuables) out of site
  • Avoid stopping in remote locations
  • Keep the car locked at all times
  • Have emergency gear in the car
