Floods, Earthquakes, and Cyber-Terrorists All in the News
The TV news has been depressing-- floods in the Midwest, earthquake in Italy, and this morning cyber terrorists from Russia and China have apparently hacked our electrical power grid. Every time we have a string of news like this I start to think about being prepared for disasters.
I don't know about you, but I don't like the idea of service interruptions and being forced to rough it . . .

Do you have something on computer disaster preparedness? My computer crashed last Friday – whether due to Conficker or not is unclear. I did run a full Norton scan just before the crash. Being unable to find my Windows CD, I was unable to reload that, and in the process of trying to get restarted I deleted my data. I wound up going to a computer shop to get it going again. I had various kinds of backups for the most crucial data: an external disk for pictures; a memory stick for family members’ critical data (there is one folder each for personal stuff); and a couple of higher activity files that I backup by e-mailing them to myself every week or so.
The computer shop is closed on Saturday and Sunday, so I had to wait two days to get it in there, and only got it back on Tuesday. Meanwhile I fretted about my income taxes. I had it all backed up, but I was unsure whether the software would work again when I reloaded it (It did!).
The positive outcome is that my computer now has much more available space on the disk than it did before the crash, meaning that I lost a lot of stuff I can’t account for but I’m getting along so maybe I didn’t need it. It went from about 4GB of free space to about 24GB.

You nailed it- back-ups.
I had read the only safe computer is one that is not connected to the internet and resides in a "Faraday" room-- protected from electric and outside signals.
That idea aside-- back-ups!
