Do You Homeschool?
The answer is we all do or should. Yes, my kids and stepkids attend public schools, but I still see a responsibility to "homeschool" them. I bring this up because of a reader reaction to my post, Keepin' Up With the Jones' . . . Hell No!
One of the things my wife and I struggle with is raising our kids with some of our perspective on things. The trouble we have is the lifestyles led by those around them, their other parents, other family, friends, peers, and acquaintances. In many cases, people who can't or won't say, "No".
Whether you like it or not, as a parent you have a responsibility to educate or "homeschool" your children. Sometimes that means being unpopular, many times it means saying, "No".
The education your kids should receive from you includes teaching them:
- Right from wrong
- Moderation and delayed gratification
- Personal and fiscal responsibility
- Self-sufficiency
- Manners and common courtesy
- Honesty and respect
- To think for themselves
We work hard at grounding these kids in reality and preparing them for the real world. We accept the responsibility of doing our best, we just wish other parents would step up and do the same . . . it might make our job a little easier.
