Three Point Meals: The Formula For Square Meals

A quick idea on preparing square meals (or triangular, if you will).  The other day I commented on another blog's post about inexpensive and quick meals, I mentioned simple, "Three Point" meals.  I thought I would expand upon what I meant by the term.

My wife and I have a small army to feed, so we have to provide frugal, but square meals.  Our idea of a Three Point meal is:

  • A meat
    • Beef
    • Poultry
    • Pork
    • Fish
  • A starch
    • Potato (Any style)
    • Pasta
    • Rice (Brown, wild, yellow, etc.)
  • A vegetable (I usually like two)

Mix and match as you like.  By providing starches and veggies, we can cut back on the expensive meat and the kids never complain (a real money saving approach).

I love the way you classify your foods. I do the same as well. I say a meat product, a starch and a veg. That constitutes a balanced meal for me and I try to feed 4 for under $10 a meal...well, dinner anyway. Breakfast is easy to do for under $5.

$10 is my magic number for dinners too-- it's a challenge.  We are usually feeding four, but sometimes six.

We actually follow the same philosophy. Whenever possible I like the “meat” to be fish, but in addition to your other listed meats we also use eggs and tofu for this. We never have poultry due to the wife’s dislike for it. I sneak out and have chicken or turkey occasionally. Our starch – Asian wife – is overwhelmingly rice although we do sometimes have pasta. If we have potatoes, then we have rice too. Our first preference is Jasmine (Thai) rice although we have other varieties sometimes. We like leafy vegetables and take whatever we can get in that category. When Asian vegetables are available I like yu choy, gai choy, kai lan, nappa, sawi, bitter gourd (but not kang kong). The American leafy favorites are turnip greens, mustard, collards (but not kale or spinach). We also use daikon, wing beans, long beans.

Having expressed all this liking for vegetables, it is strange that our kids won’t touch them. Taking the BLT for example, my daughter removes the tomato.

We have already bought seeds for summer garden vegetables and need to start planting them. We got Asian vegetable seeds from Kitazawa (kitazawaseed.com).
