Dreams, Hopes, and Ambitions

Yesterday, I was thinking about dreams.  I was wondering what keeps people, myself included, from reaching their dreams fast or at all.

First, let's clear something up.  We need to have attainable dreams.  I can dream of winning the Master's in golf, but I have a handicap (pun intended) when compared to Tiger Woods-- I didn't start playing as a toddler, the game doesn't come naturally to me, and I am not obsessed with the game.  The point is while anything is possible, dreams need to be realistic.

So assume we have realistic dreams, what holds us back?  I decided to create a list of the biggest reasons as I see it:

  • Ourselves-- We can be the biggest obstacle to achieving our dreams.  Fear of success, laziness (lack of persistence and failure to act live here too), resistance to change, lack of belief and faith in ourselves . . . the list could go on and on.  The remedy is to work everyday on changing our thinking.  Getting up in the morning and be determined to make some small iota of forward progress
  • Know how-- A lack of knowledge or skills can be an obstacle.  Sometimes, we need to jump through some educational and training hoops.  This can be remedied with time, money, and effort
  • Opportunity-- A lack of opportunity can exist, but not forever.  It has been said that it is better to be prepared and have no opportunity, than to have an opportunity and not be prepared.  "No money" and social class are not excuses here either.  The remedy is to constantly be seeking the opportunity, letting others know you seek the opportunity, and eventually you will trip over the opportunity-- just remember you may need to recognize the opportunity when it comes

Sure setbacks will happen, but failure isn't failure until you quit or give up and stop trying.  Edison is said to have gone through thousands of attempts to come up with the light bulb.  How many attempts have you made?

I can't tell you what your dreams are or should be.  I can tell you that you can achieve them-- it may not be easy, but it can be done.

What small thing can you do today to move toward your dreams, hopes, desires?  Think about it . . .

I think the last question of this post is the most important - what can we do TODAY (or right now) to move us forward towards realizing our dream?

After all, the longest journey starts with a single step ... most people contemplate the long journey and never really get moving. I think just by focusing and acting on the next immediate step, we get there before we know it!

    Blessings,

You hit the nail on the head Andrea-- "Today" and the first step is always the hardest.
