Salt and Sugar Substitutes

When trying to cut back on salts and sugars, one needs substitutes, here are a few ideas--

Instead of salt try:

  • Horseradish
  • Garlic
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Vinegar
  • Lemon
  • Basil
  • Pepper

Instead of sugar try:

  • Honey
  • Orange or other juice
  • Cinnamon
  • Mint

Then again, there is always salt or sugar in moderation . . .

We're big on Stevia, a natural herb used to sweeten soft drinks in Japan for about 30 years. We grow it in our greenhouses and we buy it in bottles with eye droppers for application to drinks and recipes.

One leaf crushed up in your ice tea is all you need to sweeten the glass. Once we get our sugar used up, we're never buying it again. Sugar is probably the biggest contributor to health problems.

I have heard of Stevia, but have never tried it-- not yet at least.

As for sugar itself, everything in moderation . . .
