These days, you never know what could happen to your job or career.  Taking these for granted is not very prudent-- it always helps to have something else in your back pocket.  I used to know an attorney who had his bartender's license framed and hanging on the wall in his law office.  He used to half-jokingly claim it was his back-up plan . . .

Here are some reasons to consider alternatives:

• Avoid having all your eggs in one basket
• Stop-gap income protection
• Sideline or supplemental income
• Career transition
• Personal satisfaction
