Insights From "John Adams"

Last night, the HBO miniseries, "John Adams" won a record number of Emmy's.
My wife and I weren't surprised-- it was an excellent series.

Frugal, green, self-sufficient, and simple living fans can learn from the life of John Adams and his family as portrayed in that series.  My wife and I have talked about this program all summer.  Here's what we gleaned from it:

  • John Adams was both a lawyer AND a farmer to provide for his family-- this was long before he became a statesman, international representative, vice president, and president.
  • John and his family had only what they needed to live-- clothes, tools, and household furnishings in particular
  • John and his family practiced recycle, repurpose, and reuse-- waste was not a factor compost for the garden and kindling for the fire.
  • John and his family all pitched in to make it all work-- his wife, Abigail, and their kids covering the homestead while he was away
  • John and his family sacrificed for the common good and a better life in the future
  • John and his family persevered through adversity as a family-- you felt the strength of the unit

I am always intrigued learning about our founding fathers and I highly recommend viewing this series to see simple living and patriotism in action.
