What Goes Into My Compost Pile?

I am always looking for good soil for my vegetable garden.
Creating a compost pile will provide a steady stream of soil.

I have three piles going.  What goes into a good compost pile?  Pretty much any kitchen scraps (save meat, bones, grease, and fats) and yard wastes.

Here is the typical contents of my compost piles:

  • Banana peels
  • Egg Shells
  • Tea bags
  • Coffee grinds
  • Any produce scraps
  • Old plants
  • Apple cores
  • Fruit rinds
  • Fish racks (Bury these deep)
  • Leaves
  • Grass clippings
  • Wood shavings
  • Sawdust
  • Shredded newspapers

Beyond soil enrichment and cutting down on trash, an added bonus is the big bounty of worms for fishing.
