Home heating oil and diesel fuel are the same thing-- #2 diesel.  There are two differences and they are related: 1) home diesel doesn't include Federal and State Transportation Taxes and 2) To tell the difference some states require a red dye in home heating oil (don't get caught with red diesel in your gas tank unless it is an off road farm implement!)

When you can't afford a 150 gallon minimum fill or paying the $40-50 service charge for a short fill-- go to the gas station and get 5 gallons in your yellow diesel container.  You will pay the transport tax, but at about a dollar a gallon-- it beats the service charge and you avoid completely draining your tank.

A nice stop gap solution!
